According to this article on BBC the EU court has ruled that retaining data of citizens communications are in violation to two basic rights – respect for private life and protection of personal data.
I believe that those rights also must be applied not only to the information being passed in the wires and gathered by the telcos, but also in how we store and share personal information. I think people will start to think more about what information they make publicly available and also what information they make available to other maybe not so public parties.
Whether that is for statistical and profiling use, or with purposely illegal content. Maybe reading your calendar on the cloud service to see when the best time is to break into your home. And since you sent an email to your neighbor that will water your plants with the alarm code they are home free.
